Environmental Pollution: Lake Turns to Pink Color in Argentina
Chubut province in Argentina has a population of about 6 lakh and most of these locals are hired by fish processing factories in the area. Chubut, a 800 km long river is the major source of water and also a major dustbin for dumping industrial waste for the companies in the nearby to it.
As the Residents of Rawson, near Trelew
complaining of pollution and in recent weeks protested by blocking the roads.
Due to these protests in Rawson, the provincial authorities granted permission
for factories to dump their waste in the Corfo lagoon.
Presence sodium sulfite, an antibacterial product used in fish factories causes the aquatic bodies to turn bright pink color. It is especially used to preserve prawns for export. The turned color was found to be abnormal as it was stays on the same color for the past one week. Many industries from industrial park in Trelew use this chemical.
As per the law, chemical sodium sulfite,
that has caused color changes of the lagoon, should have been treated
before being dumped in the water.
Activists and residents living near the
Chubut river often complained about the pollution discharge which led a foul
smell in the river. But the authorities are not strict to the industries which
causes environmental damages which may nay take decades to overcome from the
pollution. Locals have also complained that because of this pollution there is
proliferation of insects.
